Located in the central part of Gansu Province, on the upper reaches of the Yellow River, Baiyin City is an important transportation hub connecting the northwest and the mainland. Named for the "silver" deposits, it was once a key non-ferrous metal base during the First Five-Year Plan period, and enjoys the reputation of "China's Copper City". It is now under the jurisdiction of Baiyin and Pingchuan districts and Huining, Jingyuan and Jingtai counties, with a total area of 21,200 square kilometers.
