Arbutus is an unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, located about five miles southwest of Baltimore City. It is not an independent city, but has a unique community culture and history as a densely populated neighborhood. The name Arbutus is derived from the locally common rhododendron plant (Arbutus), and the settlement grew with the development of the railroad in the late 19th century.
Arbutus is conveniently located in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area, adjacent to Interstate I-95 and I-695. According to the U.S. Census, the community has a population of approximately 20,000, and is predominantly white with a diverse mix of ethnicity. It is characterized by tree-lined streets and a family-friendly environment that attracts many residents who commute to Baltimore or Washington, DC.
The community's economy is dominated by small businesses and retail, with the Abbotts business district located along East Drive. Educationally, it is part of the Baltimore County Public Schools system, including Abbotts Elementary School. Higher education institutions such as the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) are also nearby.
Abbotts is known for the annual Abbotts Summer Festival, which includes a parade and fireworks. Community parks offer recreational facilities and are close to Patapsco Valley State Park for outdoor activities. Its combination of old-fashioned architecture and modern amenities retains a small-town feel with urban conveniences.
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island country in west-central Africa, consisting of the islands of São Tomé and Príncipe and the surrounding islets, with the capital, São Tomé, located in the northeastern part of São Tomé. Located on the Gulf of Guinea, about 200 kilometers from the African continent, the country was colonized by Portugal in the 15th century and became independent in 1975, with Portuguese as the official language and an economy based on agriculture (cocoa, palm oil) and tourism. It should be noted that "Java" is not a city or region of the country; Java is the main island of Indonesia, with cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya, and has nothing to do with São Tomé and Príncipe, possibly due to a confusion of names.
