Located in Knox County, Maine in the northeastern United States, Appleton is a small rural community with a population of about 1,300. Founded in 1829 and named after early settler Samuel Appleton, the town's history is closely tied to the development of agriculture and forestry.

Jingyu County, located in Baishan City, Jilin Province, at the western foot of Changbai Mountain and the upper reaches of Songhua River, is a famous old revolutionary area and the martyrdom place of General Yang Jingyu, the "Hero of the Resistance". It was renamed in 1946 in honor of General Yang Jingyu, and carries a thick red history.
