As a political, economic and cultural center, the city blends traditional Malagasy style with colonial architecture, and is known for its red brick houses and winding hillside streets.
Founded in the 17th century, Antananarivo was once the capital of the Kingdom of Merina and retains historical monuments such as the Queen's Palace.
