Amite is a historic town in eastern Tangipahoa County, Louisiana, United States, located on the banks of the Amite River near the Mississippi border, about 60 miles from the state capital of Baton Rouge. Founded in the mid-1800s, its name is derived from a local Native American language meaning "river" or "waters," demonstrating its deep connection to the waterways.
