The town is known for its lead and zinc mining, with one of the largest lead and zinc mines in the world, Maamorilik (Black Lead), and mining was once the mainstay of the local economy. The population is predominantly Inuit and maintains a traditional hunting and fishing culture, with dog sledding still an important mode of transportation. The climate is polar, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Despite its remoteness, Akunak attracts a small number of explorers and tourists because of its unique polar landscapes and Inuit culture, and is a window into Greenland's untouched landscape.
