Akhiok is a Native American village in southwestern Kodiak Island, Alaska, United States, located along the Kupreanof Strait between the Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island, in the Kodiak Island Borough. The community is centered on the Sugpiaq culture and has a population of approximately 80 (2020 data). The residents are engaged in traditional fishing and hunting, and make their living by harvesting salmon and cod and trading sea otter pelts. Aboriginal traditions remain strong here, with language, art and community ceremonies still an important part of life. Surrounded by pristine forests and coastline, with glaciers and whales visible in the summer and the aurora borealis often visible in the winter, Akshiok is a unique destination to experience the nature and culture of remote Alaska. With no road connections and transportation primarily by small plane or boat, the community maintains a quiet and primitive lifestyle.
