Ajo is a historic desert town located in Pima County in southwestern Arizona, USA, near the Mexican border. Deriving its name from the Spanish word for "copper," the town sprang up in the late 1800s with the discovery of rich copper deposits and became a center of local mining in the early 1900s through the New Cornelia Copper Mine. Today, Ajo retains distinctive Spanish colonial architecture, such as the San Agustin Church, and is surrounded by the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, with its spectacular desert landscape and rich biodiversity. With a population of approximately 3,300, the town's tourism and mining industries combine to form a local economy that attracts travelers seeking serenity and history.
Situated in southwestern Guatemala, next to the border with El Salvador, Sivinal is an important town in the department of Santa Rosa. Surrounded by the remnants of the Fuego volcano, the town's fertile volcanic soil produces excellent coffee and sugarcane crops, and the local agriculture and handicrafts (especially traditional pottery weaving) are unique. The town center retains its colonial architecture, and the quiet streets contrast with the surrounding terraced rice fields and volcanic landscape, attracting tourists in search of a pristine idyll. As the node that connects Guatemala City to the Pacific coast, Sivinal is both a showcase of Guatemala's agrarian traditions and a must-visit for exploring the cultures of the Southwest, thanks to its unique location and natural charms.
