Deriving its name from the Spanish word for "copper," the town sprang up in the late 1800s with the discovery of rich copper deposits and became a center of local mining in the early 1900s through the New Cornelia Copper Mine. Today, Ajo retains distinctive Spanish colonial architecture, such as the San Agustin Church, and is surrounded by the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, with its spectacular desert landscape and rich biodiversity. With a population of approximately 3,300, the town's tourism and mining industries combine to form a local economy that attracts travelers seeking serenity and history.
