Aguila (Aguila Fria), located in central Arizona in Maricopa County, USA, is a historic community whose name is derived from the Spanish word for "cold water" and is closely associated with the Aguila River, which runs through the area. Originally a Native American settlement, the area grew as a result of mining and agricultural development in the 19th century. Located on the edge of the Sonoran Desert, the climate is arid with little rain, hot summers and mild winters, with an average annual temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius. Nestled around Aguila is the Aguila National Monument, which preserves a large number of prehistoric petroglyphs and shell mounds, making it an important site for the study of Paleo-Indian cultures. Today, the area is dominated by small-scale farming, ranching and tourism, and the community has a peaceful atmosphere that still retains the unique desert flavor and historical imprint of the Southwest.
