Aquaviva is one of the nine municipalities (castles) of the Republic of San Marino, located in the northwestern part of the country, on the border with the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna. Its name means "living water", originating from the clear mountain springs in the area. As the largest municipality in San Marino, Acquaviva is characterized by its hilly landscape and traditional stone architecture, preserving the appearance of a medieval castle.
The history of the commune dates back to the 13th century, with the remains of the Church of St. Andrew and the fortifications. Folklore events, such as the traditional archery tournament, are held every September, perpetuating the old community culture of San Marino. The economy is based on small crafts, agriculture and cross-border trade, with olive cultivation and winemaking being important industries.
Acquaviva is connected to the capital city of San Marino by the San Marino highway, about 30 minutes from the Italian coast of Rimini. Visitors can experience hiking trails, visit a family-run cheese workshop and travel to the neighboring city of San Marino to see the historic center of Mount Titano, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
